The First Annual Valentine’s Lingerie and Jewelry Fashion Show to Benefit Voices for Children is scheduled to take place on the 30th of January.  Voices for Children is the fundraising branch of the 11th Judicial Circuit Guardian Ad Litem Program and seeks to give underprivileged children a voice in dependency court as well as help ensure that these children receive financial assistance to pay for their educational, social and healthcare needs.

This is an excellent opportunity for guests to purchase Valentine’s Day presents for their loved ones while at the same time helping to benefit underprivileged children in the community.  There will be a  fashion show and entertainment by Pulitzer Prize winning comedian, Dave Barry and guests will have the opportunity to purchase the jewelry showcased in this event.

The day will begin at 11:30 with cocktails and registration and the fashion show starts at 12 pm.  It will take place at the Mandarin Oriental located at 500 Brickell Key Drive in Miami Florida, 33131.  Tables for up to ten people will sell for $10,000 and individual seating is also available at a cost of $500.  Proceeds from ticket sales as well as ten percent of jewelry sales will be donated to Voices for Children.  Space is limited.  In order to reserve a table or seats, please contact Paula Vargas at (305) 324-5678 est. 13.

Miami business leader Jeffrey Berkowitz is the man behind the idea for this fundraiser, which will be presented by Neimann Marcus, Coral Gables and the Mandarin Oriental, Miami.

This will be the Voices for Children’s 25th anniversary of helping neglected, abused and abandoned children.  This First Annual Valentine’s Lingerie and Jewelry Fashion Show is also the first event to be held in the voices for Children’s 25th year helping local children who are underprivileged.

My husband Jon and I will be in attendance because this fundraiser is sure to be a wonderful time and will help raise a considerable amount of monies for the Voices for Children Foundation.  Be sure to come out for this great cause.

According to an article I have just read entitled, “Downtown Miami skyscrapers going green”, Three Miami highrises will be making “green” modifications and additions.  The three buildings that will be given a more ecologically friendly makeover include the largest tower in Florida, the Wachovia Financial Center as well as the Bank of America Tower and 1450 Brickell Avenue, which is expected to be finished by January 2010.

These three buildings will be receiving green additions and modifications in order to be certified at the highest standard, save money and energy and be more appealing to buyers who are more conscious and want environmentally friendly properties.  Proposed changes to the buildings will include using energy-efficient bulbs for lighting, an effective recycling program and janitorial services that utilize “green” chemicals.  These three things are requisites for receiving a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification.  After the planned modifications, the Wachovia Tower will be the first office tower in existence to receive a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) silver rating.  1450 Brickell Avenue is the first office building to receive LEED gold precertification for its documented plans to meet “green” performance and systems requisites.

Many builders are now incorporating green building strategies in their new projects but it is important to remember that older pre-existing buildings like these three can easily be modified to be more environmentally friendly and sustainable.  Hopefully, by bringing these existing buildings up to date in terms of sustainability, the owners will be able to offer more value to their tenants for the same money.

While many folks think that green buildings cost more, making office buildings and other structures more sustainable actually saves money over the mid and long terms.  Whether you believe that global climate change can or cannot be attributed to humans, you would have to agree that prevention is always better than curing.
