Lotus House to benefit from Hope Blossoms Art Event

Hope Blossoms is an art event that will benefit the Lotus House homeless women’s shelter located in the African American historic district of Overtown in Miami-Dade County. This event, which is now in its fifth year, will feature more than 30 contemporary artists of various disciplines from all over the United States. Unlike previous installments of this annual event, this year’s fundraiser will feature both artists’ and attendees’ live works of art which will include food, movement, music, paint, poetry and sculpture. The theme of all of these works of art will be hope and of course, there will also be traditional exhibits of paintings and sculptures done by professional artists. This event takes place tonight, Friday October 16 starting at 8 p.m.

Doubletree and Marriott Hotels will be contributing by donating hotels for artists who are travelling to this art event and local restaurants such as Azul, Eos and Gallery Gourmet will be donating food for the artists and attendees to enjoy. So far Lotus house has sold some 650 of the 800 tickets that they printed for this art event.

Lotus House is a residential facility that serves homeless women and children in the Miami-Dade County. It is appropriately located in one of the poorest and most crime-riddled large American cities, where of course, their services are most needed. Lotus House provides free transitional housing for up to 50 women and children at a time and there is also a maternity wing for pregnant women and women with infants. For many women who are homeless due to medical or mental illnesses, domestic violence, disability or due to economic difficulties, there is nowhere else they can turn in their time of need, which makes the work that the Lotus House is doing a benefit to the entire community.

So if you are an art lover, or just a hopeless philanthropist, why not get out to the Margoulis Art Warehouse tonight and enjoy an evening of great art and help to benefit those women and children in Miami-Dade County who would not have anywhere to go were it not for the Lotus House and events such as this one. Miami Beach City Commission approves plans for Flamingo Park

After 18 months of negotiating, the Miami Beach City Commission has finally approved the plans for the $10.4 million in improvements for Flamingo Park. According to an article that I have just read in the MiamiHerald.com, it should only be about a year before the construction of the 4,200 square foot tennis center and courts are complete. Charles Carreño, the director of Miami Beach’s Capital Improvements Projects Office has said that the remaining improvements, which could take up to another year or two to complete, will be scheduled after the completion of the tennis center and courts in order to avoid closing the entire park.

Since the Commission approved the plans unanimously, the city has been concentrating on designs for the tennis center, 17 new hydro-clay courts, a skate park and other improvements and amenities that will be included in this project. The plans include two upgraded dog parks, landscaping and a water area for children as well as a renovated baseball stadium, and new artificial turf for the field that borders on Alton Road.

Of course, there are still things that have to be considered, such as the type of lighting that will be used and how to best make use of the space, among other things, but at least the master plans have been approved. Now commissioners can move forward with looking for bids and pulling the necessary permits.

So, even though it has taken forever for these plans to finally be approved and design planning to begin on this great Miami Beach Park and landmark, it shouldn’t be long now before these badly needed renovations begin and not too much longer after that, before they are completed.
